The detailed mode and the table of the play-offs is decided by WMF Technical Committee and is published in the official invitation for the World/Continental Championships.

Penalty system: No penalties from team competition are carried forward to the play-offs.
First step is a written pre-warning with no consequences.
For all following violations the player in question loses the next unfinished lane (meaning the next lane, which has no winner yet).
Referees have the possibility to skip the pre-warning level in case of severe or tactical violations.
All penalties are announced via loudspeakers.
